2024-Present|Domestic Chronotopes: Archaeology of the Everyday

  • "As I was walking around dusting things off in my room, I came to the sofa. For the life of me, I couldn't recall whether I had already dusted it off or not. Since these movements are habitual and unconscious, I felt that it was already impossible to remember it. If I had in fact dusted the sofa and forgotten that I had done so, i.e., if I had acted unconsciously, then this is tantamount to not having done it at all. If someone had seen me doing this consciously, then it might have been possible to restore this in my mind. If, on the other hand, no one had been observing me or observing me only unconsciously, if the complex life of many people takes place entirely on the level of the unconscious, then it's as if this life had never been” - Lev Tolstoy, Diary, Nikol'skoe, February 29, 1897, cited in Viktor Shklovsky, Theory of Prose, trans. Benjamin Sher, intro. Gerald L. Bruns. -

The installation inhabits space by drawing on the archetype of contemporary living: an essential environment, devoid of human traces.  Within this space, I place pure geometric volumes—rectangular parallelepipeds—that replicate, at a 1:1 scale, the size and height of domestic objects: a table, a bathtub, a carpet. These abstract forms, seemingly inert, come to life through screens positioned on their surface, displaying video recordings of everyday actions associated with those spaces. These moving images intertwine with the overlapping sounds from the respective works.

A custom-designed artificial intelligence manipulates these video streams, altering the temporality of actions and, in certain works, even removing the objects that mediate them. Time expands and contracts in response to external elements acting as causal conditions, while bodies move, stripped of the tools that typically mediate their interaction with space. Through this dual process of abstraction, the installation reveals the archetypal foundation of everyday gestures, transforming each surface into a palimpsest where memory and presence intersect. The intimate, familiar space of the home is rendered unfamiliar, forcing us to re-examine what habit had made invisible. Everyday gestures, slowed down or accelerated, deprived of their cultural prosthetics, emerge in their unsettling beauty.
