Installation views of Tutti i presenti che non sono mai esistiti in StadtGalerie Brixen, 2025

Tutti i presenti che non sono mai esistiti (All Those Present Who Never Existed) originates from a dialogue between the research of Swiss artist Roger Weiss and Italo-Swiss artist Valentina De’Mathà on the concepts of identity, memory, perception of reality, and the present.

The spaces of the StadtGalerie Brixen are reinterpreted as a metaphorical dwelling, where the exhibition path unfolds through different levels of intimacy.

The gallery’s distinctive architecture, structured into a main hall and a smaller room, is emphasized through a chromatic duality that divides the main space into two intercommunicating environments. In one half, the walls are anthracite; in the other, they are white. Each environment has its own independent entrance, allowing for two different readings of the exhibition path depending on the chosen access.

In the anthracite-walled exhibition area, Roger Weiss presents three video installations from the series ‘Domestic Chronotopes: Archaeology of the Everyday’, a work exploring the subtle threshold where the ordinary transcends its apparent banality, creating a “chronotope”—a space where time and space intersect in complex and revealing ways. The installation functions as a living archive of the everyday. At the intersection between time and space, memory and presence, an artificial intelligence specifically developed for this series by Brandcraft intervenes on two levels: on one hand, it alters the temporal linearity of the videos in response to external elements acting as causal conditions, on the other, in a selection of works, it also manipulates the documented daily actions by selectively removing the mediating objects of the action—for example, a person cleaning a carpet without a vacuum cleaner or a couple eating without using cutlery. This subtraction of mediating objects highlights the human gesture stripped of its cultural prosthesis, revealing its primordial nature through obsessive repetition. By exploring the tension between the materiality of domestic objects and the temporal fluidity of human actions, these works investigate how mental schemas and the automatism of daily gestures can obscure the richness of the present experience.

Meanwhile, Valentina De’Mathà displays a selection of six wall-mounted works created using RA-4 and engravings on transparent emulsified polyester (200x127 cm), from the series ‘If You Can Look Outside, Others Can Look Inside’. These works analyze the fragmentation and decomposition of the perception of oneself and how others perceive us, rooted in psychological, philosophical, and cultural inquiries. The works resemble shattered reflective glass, breaking up our image/identity, which constantly shifts in the gaze of the Other. As we walk down the street, for example, our figure multiplies and fractures, reflecting everywhere: in shop windows, in the passing car windows, in the diverse viewpoints of strangers’ gazes. Everywhere, eyes are watching us, each seeing different aspects of us—continuous facets and pieces of our personality. They also allude to the luminous screens of smartphones through which we communicate in contemporary society. The shattering of these screens signifies the desire to break through the Maya Veil, as described by Schopenhauer, shattering illusions in search of a deeper reality. The choice to place these works on gray walls aims to overturn their meaning, seeking deeper intimacy and introspection rather than mere appearance—an invitation to dim the dazzling lights that blind us and encourage self-analysis.

In the white-walled exhibition area, a metaphorical garden takes shape. At the center of the room, Roger Weiss presents ‘Cyclical Time’, a floor-based video installation showing a man and a woman crossing a pool, reflecting a borderland forest between two nations. The concentric ripples generated by their movement continuously fragment and recompose the image, evoking the cyclical nature of time and relationships. The installation is surrounded by a grassy lawn, requiring direct physical engagement from the viewer to approach the work.
On the surrounding white walls, Valentina De’Mathà presents a selection of five works (160x106 cm) from the ‘Four Seasons’ series, created in a darkroom using experimental chemical processes on emulsified paper. These works also explore the fluidity between transitions, the blurred and overlapping margins between what ends and what emerges in the cyclical flow of events. Humanity, by existing in the world and being part of it, constantly relativizes and transforms it. The glossiness of the papers allows the viewer to become part of the work, reflecting their surroundings—just as they are part of the world—creating ever-changing possibilities: dynamic, unpredictable realities that vary in their repetition.

The smaller room, representing the most intimate part of the house, hosts four video projections by Roger Weiss, completing the ‘Domestic Chronotopes’ series with scenes linked to the intimacy of a bathroom: a woman in a bathtub, a toilet, a bidet, and a sink documenting daily rituals. In dialogue with these works, Valentina De’Mathà presents a triptych on emulsified polyester simulating a landscape extending beyond a window—the relationship between the Self (Selbst) and the Other. The exhibition thus creates an immersive experience, inviting the visitor to explore different levels of intimacy and perception.
The works of both artists, while maintaining their distinct technical and conceptual approaches, create a dialectical vision through reflections on memory and temporality (both cyclical and layered), the transformation of daily perception, the tension between material and immaterial, between the representation of facts and cultural psychological analysis. They explore where the familiar and the extraordinary merge, where the personal becomes universal, and where the viewer is invited to rediscover an awareness that reconnects them to the richness of the present.
The temporal modulation of Roger Weiss’ videos naturally generates an alteration of sound, creating a surreal soundscape that enhances the sense of estrangement. The sum of sounds from the different works and perspectives forms a symphony of the everyday, amplifying the exhibition’s perceptual experience.
